Kentucky Joins Prescription Card Program

(Louisville, KY) – A new discount prescription drug card is now available for use in Kentucky. It's called the Kentucky Rx Card. The card is part of a larger program that's running in over two dozen states. Louisville Councilwoman Vicki Welch says the card is free to everyone in Kentucky.

However, Welch says it will be most useful to the uninsured and under-insured, who could save up to 75% on some drugs. Welch says the program does not involve any taxpayer money.

"It's done on a bulk buying basis, all over our nation," Welch said. "We already have 30 states in the program, we already have 30 million people in the program. So you see what kind of buying base it is."

Welch worked to get the program launched in Kentucky after hearing about it at a National League of Cities conference. More than 800 Kentucky pharmacies participate in the program.
